Bank Books, on historic Main Street in Searsport, Maine,
is easy to spot with its distinctive Mansard-roofed profile
and solid brick exterior -- one of the most beautiful 19th-century
buildings on the Maine coast.
Although we can't prove it,
we suspect we're the only bookshop for many miles around
that's located in a former bank building, boasting painted
tin ceilings, 150-year-old oak floors and carved wainscoting,
a fireplace, and the pièce de résistance: our
massive old bank vault with all its gears and finials.
