ooks,
Books, Books: We carry the basics, the best-sellers, and
award-wining titles, but focus on books we think you won't
find elsewhere. We know that we might be a bit out of the
way and want to be worth the trip. These are some of our
favorite categories -- but with 5,000-plus titles it's hard
to choose!
Travel – We
have guidebooks, maps, a rich collection of travel essays,
and a particular weakness for unique titles such as City
Secrets London, Barcelona: The Great Enchantress, Walks in Hemingway's Paris, and The
Great Railroad Bazaar.
Fiction – Contemporary and classic fiction (14 titles for Charles
Dickens alone!) with special depth in prizewinners, short stories, foreign authors
and new translations.
Children's Books – While
board books and paperbacks are ideal for most children’s
titles, we try to have a full selection of classics in
hardcover editions. You’ll also find many old childhood
favorites: the
Goops, Dick and Jane, Snipp Snapp & Snurr, as
well as many nonfiction titles and beautiful editions of
poetry and fairy tales.
Biography & History – We don't know
many bookshop owners who aren't passionate about these
two subjects. We start with The Bog People and
end with Howard Zinn!
Mysteries – If
it's mysterious and foreign, we try to have it: from
intrigue in occupied Paris or post-war Spain, to murder
in Venice, Amsterdam and Stockholm. And if we don't have
your favorite, we’d love to hear
about it and include it in our next order.
Maine & New England – Classic Maine
titles include books by Kenneth Roberts, Elizabeth Ogilvie
and Ruth Moore. We also have recent works by Richard Russo
and Linda Greenlaw, and shelves of guidebooks, art books
and children's classics.
There are equally wonderful choices in Nature and Pets, Religion and Philosophy, Poetry, Cooking, Art and Architecture, Home and Garden, Reference, Belles Lettres, Psychology and Family, and Music. If we don't have a title, we hope
you'll recommend it to us.

Journals, Stationery, Cards and Globes
We're more than "just" books,
though. Each of us still believes in the charm of a handwritten
note, the rewards of keeping a journal, and the joy in
presenting a beautifully wrapped gift, such as a book,
perhaps?
We proudly feature
• Handsome stationery and imported boxed
notecards.
• One-of-a-kind handpainted greeting cards.
• Distinctive
cards for special occasions, featuring 1950s humor, French
and Italian scenes, animals, art treasures and books.
• Leather
Italian journals, colorful notebooks and wonderful "Moleskines".
• Handsome globes, from 4 inches to 12 inches, in
every price range (many illuminated and some of the night
sky).
• Beautiful wrapping paper, including reproduction antique maps of London, Paris, Rome, New York City and Tokyo, and unusual ribbon to wrap them all up.
Finally, there are objects of intrigue
that we just like to have around from time to time – lovely
English glass paperweights, vintage animal nodders (Flamingos!
Rhinos!), imported chocolates, and old-fashioned rubber
erasers with endearing designs. We especially enjoy finding
holiday cards and trinkets you won't find everywhere, but
are perfect to tuck in with your book selections for unusual
gifts.
